Frequently asked questions
Can't find your answer? Email support@prep.tax.
›Is prep.tax a CPA or tax preparer?
No. prep.tax is software that helps you track income, expenses, mileage, and estimated taxes, and prepare a Schedule C summary. All numbers are estimates. You — or your CPA — are responsible for the final filing.
›Who is prep.tax for?
US-based gig workers, freelancers, and solopreneurs who file a Schedule C — 1099-NEC, 1099-K, or just self-reported cash income. We cover 100+ work types with deductions tailored to each.
›Do you support every state?
Yes. Federal self-employment and income tax are calculated for everyone; state rates are applied based on the state in your profile.
›Can I import bank transactions?
Yes. Connect a bank or card account via Plaid (read-only) and we'll pull transactions, suggest categories, and let you confirm what's deductible.
›Do you support reseller inventory / COGS?
Yes, via an optional Resellers add-on. It unlocks Part III of Schedule C: inventory snapshots, purchases, materials, and labor flowing into a calculated Cost of Goods Sold.
›What about quarterly estimated taxes?
We project your annual liability from year-to-date data and recommend a Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4 set-aside. You'll get reminders before each IRS deadline.
›How does mileage tracking work?
You can log trips manually or use the in-app GPS tracker. Each mile is multiplied by the current IRS standard mileage rate.
›Is my data secure?
TLS 1.2+ in transit, AES-256 at rest, row-level access control, optional 2FA, and read-only bank connections. See our Security page for details.
›Can I cancel?
Any time, from Settings → Billing. You'll keep access until the end of your current billing period. See the Refund Policy for refund details.
›Is there a free trial?
Yes — 14 days, no card required.
